Plante Moran Realpoint client Macomb County Jail recently unveiled renderings for a new Central Intake and Assessment Center. The $228 million project will encompass approximately 177,000 square feet of new construction added to the jail complex’s tower.
The County hopes the new assessment center will serve as a national model for contemporary jail design as more emphasis is placed on treatment and rehabilitation over punishment. The renderings demonstrate a new look for the county jail, which better reflects a hospital than a correctional facility.
The project will involve demolishing some of the existing structures surrounding the jail’s nine-story tower and using that area for the new four-level facility that will house 303 beds. The bottom level will serve as the drop-off area and garage, level one will reserve 112 beds for the general population, and levels two and three will reserve 191 beds for intake, medical, mental health, and substance.
The project is currently being funded by $60 million from the county and $40 million from the state. Demolition of roughly 300 beds in surrounding facilities will begin at the beginning of summer 2024. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.
